A memorable light has a life of its own, even before it is switched on. That is part of the appeal of Oblure, the Swedish lighting brand whose sculptural designs invite a second look. For CEO and co-owner Deniz Canpinar, that first impression is only the beginning.
With a background in electrical engineering, lighting design and sales, Deniz brings a practical understanding of light to the creative side of the business. In this interview, first shared in Oblure’s September 2026 newsletter, he reflects on building the brand, the changing seasons and what makes a room feel right.

I want them to pause. To feel curious about the object, and then to discover its light, material and details.
Solid oak and glowing opal glass give the Lightbone Floor Lamp its distinctive rhythm. Designed by Färg & Blanche for Oblure, it brings sculptural character to a room, both lit and unlit.

The lamp is made from solid oak and can be used solo or grouped to create striking arrangements or divide spaces in hospitality settings.

In conversation with Deniz Canpinar
How would you describe your role in the company today?
My role today is very hands-on and moves across many parts of Oblure. As CEO and co-owner, my main responsibility is to set the direction for the company and make sure that our creative ambitions, commercial goals and long-term vision support one another.
I work across strategy, brand development, sales and international growth, while staying closely connected to our clients, agents and production process. That closeness is important because it gives me a direct understanding of both the opportunities and the challenges within the business.
What drives you in your daily work, and what inspires you at the moment?
I am driven by developing Oblure as a design company and building a long-term international brand with a distinct identity. An important part of this is setting the direction ahead and making considered choices about markets, collaborations and how we bring our vision to life.
I think that the products are the clearest expression of that strategy. It is really inspiring when an idea develops into an object that feels unmistakably Oblure while also bringing something new.
As autumn arrives in Sweden, is there something about the season that makes you think more about light and atmosphere?
Yes. Autumn makes light more present. I enjoy the contrast between the darkness outside and a warm, soft glow inside. During autumn, lighting becomes less of a background element and more a part of the experience of the room itself.

Objects, atmosphere and the quality of light
How would you like people to feel when they encounter Oblure for the first time?
I want them to pause. To feel curious about the object, and then to discover its light, material and details.
The name Oblure comes from the words object and lure. I think it captures what we want to create: sculptural objects that work as standalone pieces, not just when lit. Each should be a presence in the room, a focal point that lures you in.
What do you think is often overlooked when people talk about decorative lighting?
People often speak about the luminaire as a beautiful object but overlook the quality of the light itself. To me, both must be present. A luminaire can have a beautiful form, but it must also create the right atmosphere and perform well within the room.
The opposite is equally true. A technically good light source is not enough if the object lacks personality and presence. Decorative lighting is at its best when form, material, function and light have been developed as one complete idea.
What do you think good lighting brings to a room?
Good lighting creates balance. It can reveal architecture and materials, give direction to a space and make its different elements feel more connected.
Above all, light affects how we feel. It can make a large room intimate, bring energy to a workspace or create a sense of calm that makes us want to stay. When lighting truly works, we may not immediately understand why. We simply feel that the room is right.
Lightbone: light in dialogue
Lightbone gives physical form to many of the ideas Deniz describes. Designed by Färg & Blanche, it brings solid oak and opal glass together in a sculptural composition. The glowing glass connections interrupt the timber with a gentle rhythm, making light part of the structure rather than something hidden within it.
In the floor lamp, that balance of material and light creates a distinctive presence beside a chair or sofa. The oak brings warmth and texture during the day; when illuminated, the glass adds a softer layer of atmosphere. It is a design that rewards attention without needing to dominate the room.
