It begins with a closer look

At first, you notice the light: a bright thread that seems to hang in the air. Then the glass comes into view, swelling and narrowing around it. Filamento rewards that second look. Its presence shifts between a luminous line and a transparent object, giving the eye something unusually delicate to follow.

The idea began with an observation by Madrid-based Mayice Studio, founded by Imanol Calderón Elósegui and Marta Alonso Yebra. While exploring how light travels through glass, the designers found that a particular combination of curved surfaces and light source could produce a visible filament. The profile developed from the optical effect they wanted to achieve.

Astep’s finished design brings together a borosilicate glass diffuser and an aluminium body. Concave and convex curves shape the passage of light, making the material an active part of what we see. The apparent simplicity rests on a precise relationship between the glass and the source illuminating it.

A luminous line suspended in clear glass, the Filamento Horizontal Pendant Lamp brings an unusually delicate presence to an interior. Mayice Studio developed its curved profile through an exploration of how light passes through glass, creating a visible filament within the transparent form.

At 130.7cm long, the pendant offers a considered focal point above a dining table, kitchen island or meeting table. Its transparency keeps the surrounding materials and views in play, while the glass creates a subtle rhythm along its length.

Choose More Glass or Less Glass to vary the sculptural profile. Made in Italy, Filamento combines a borosilicate glass diffuser with an aluminium body and replaceable GU10 light sources.

Three ways to draw with light

Vertical gives Filamento a different relationship with the room. A single pendant can mark a small table or a corner; a group can bring a measured rhythm to a larger space. The taller versions offer an appealing way to acknowledge ceiling height while keeping the view through the room open.

Horizontal stretches to approximately 131 cm, making its proportions worth considering above a dining table or kitchen island. In Astep’s interior imagery, the glass sits comfortably against timber, stone and metal. We particularly like how its transparency allows those substantial surfaces to remain part of the scene.

Double extends the composition to 255 cm, opening up possibilities for longer tables, generous counters and larger interiors. Scale matters here: give the light enough space for its outline to be read, and consider how it will look from the doorway as well as from a seat beneath it. The three configurations invite quite different compositions from the same design idea.

Thoughtful beyond the first impression

There is a practical consideration behind the luminous effect, too. Made in Italy, Filamento uses replaceable GU10 lamps. Astep chose this familiar light source with long-term serviceability in mind. It is a welcome detail in a design whose appeal rests so strongly on precision: the source can be replaced while the glass object continues its life.

A nomination worth celebrating

Filamento has been nominated for Lamp of the Year at the Design Awards 2026 by Bo Bedre and Bolig Magasinet. The winner will be announced on 3 November 2026 at Langelinie Pavillon in Copenhagen. For us, the nomination is a timely invitation to discover a design that makes an everyday phenomenon feel surprising again. We are delighted to introduce it to the Good Form audience and look forward to following the result.
