'Originals' Saddle Stool – Ercol

'Originals' Saddle Stool – Ercol
Maker: Ercol
Designer: Lucian R Ercolani
Year: 1956
Designed in the 1950’s by the company’s founder, Lucian Ercolani, this piece is as appropriate to today’s living as when it was originally issued. Turned out tapered legs, characteristic of the ercol style feature on this stool as well as a perfectly contoured wooden seat. The legs are made from beech and the seat from elm.
A distinctive feature of Ercol furniture is the dedication to quality craftsmanship. This can be seen through the use of the classic Windsor wedge joint. This is where the leg of the chair goes right through the seat and a wedge is then inserted into a cut in the leg, forming a remarkably strong joint. Sanded off flush with the seat, the joint then provides a beautiful design element.

Made by Ercol
Ercol was founded in England in 1920 by a young Italian, Lucian Ercolani. His simple goal was to make furniture that was well designed and made in a good working environment by craftsmen who took real pride in their jobs. Today, Ercol remains a family owned company committed to protecting and sharing its highly celebrated legacy.
Design has always been at the heart of ercol’s rich history – design for comfort, design for function and design for beauty.

Designed by Lucian R. Ercolani
Lucian Ercolani, or the "Old Man" as he is affectionately know in the company, was born in Italy in 1888. Lucian's family moved to London in the 1890s. There he went to night school at the Shoreditch Technical Institute where he studied drawing, design and the theory and construction of furniture. His designs for Ercol have received the coveted Design Guild Mark and become icons of the modern era.
